ADDICTIONS
Smoking,
Alcohol and Drug
Addiction can be a tough
cycle to break. Whether you are addicted to nicotine from years of
smoking or alcohol or other drugs, the basic concept of recovery is the
same. You must find a way to detoxify your body and control the strong
cravings of your addiction.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the release of endorphins in the brain,
which helps to combat the cravings. If treatment is given on a regular
basis, this helps to break the cycle of addiction.
Needle placement varies for each individual, but common points of
insertion include the ears, feet, and top of the head.
From a Chinese perspective,
the surface of the ear is like a map of the whole body. Points on the
ear correspond to different body parts, so by placing needles in the
points that correspond to the organs most affected by addiction,
treatment helps to detoxify those organs. Typically, the ones that are
most affected are the liver, kidneys and lungs
The Origins of Acupuncture
Treatment for Alcoholism and Addiction
Acupuncture treatment for addiction
dates back to the early 1970s. "In 1972, a neurosurgeon in Hong Kong,
Dr. H. L. Wen, was preparing a patient for surgery using ear acupuncture
as an analgesic method. The patient, who coincidentally was suffering
from withdrawal symptoms from opium, informed Dr. Wen that his
withdrawal symptoms had subsided. In light of this information, Dr. Wen
tested the procedure on other patients with similar addictions and their
discomfort diminished as well."
How it works
Addiction is a two-part problem. There
is an obsession (the desire to use, drink, or act out), which is a
mental and emotional phenomena (restlessness, discontent, irritability),
and there is a physical/emotional craving that occurs afterwards .
Ear
acupuncture also known as auriculartherapy targets specific ear points
that are used to release neurotransmitters in the brain such as
dopimine, serotonin, and endorphins, the pleasure center of the brain,
which help to break the addiction cycle. When you stimulate an acupoint,
an acupuncture nerve point, on your ear or on your body, your brain can
release the neurotransmitters that eliminate cravings from addiction
withdrawal. This technology coupled with our behavioural modification
addiction counseling and nutritional guidance currently has a75%
- 85% stop smoking
success rate.
